The Queen

The most important lady in the house....

A 2024 queen Buckfast Bee, marked here with a white marker. Wrong colour for 2024 but the breeder only uses white markers. Photo taken 16th August 2024

The First Full Colony of Buckfast Honey Bees

A Nuc containing a colony of Buckfast Honey Bees, Drones and Queen.

The Nuc (Nucleus bee colony transport box) is left in situ where the operating hive is going to be placed for a few minutes after travel, to allow the bees to settle

Releasing the bees

Once the bees had settled a bit the door is opened.

You can hear when the bees are no longer agitated from the bumps and knocks they endured during transportation. The door guard can be opened to release the bees. This allows the bees to fly around and "orientate" themselves to the new location of the hive. To set their GPS if you will.

Opening the Nuc and moving the fames

after an hour or so the bees will be fully orientated and ready to handle

The frames containing the queen, brood and bees can be moved into the new hive.

The New Hive

Transferring the frames from the Nuc into the new hive

Taking time to examine every frame, bees, eggs and the queen.

Moving the workers

Moving the workers into the super box

And finally all the workers that are still in the nuc are moved into the super that is placed on top of the brood, before closing the hive up and allowing the bees to settle in.
